August – September Monthly Queen Anne Crime Recap

Tomorrow is the first day of fall, and the tourist season is dwindling. Hopefully, this will mean a reduction in criminal activity across the city, and particularly in our neighborhood’s tourist-attracting spots such as the Seattle Center. In the past month, the following Queen Anne crime events were noted on the SPD blotter…

  • Police Arrest Queen Anne Resident on Child Pornography Charges: Police went to the home of Queen Anne resident Joel Peyton Glenn in the early morning of August 19th, and detained him on allegations that he collected child pornography. SPD seized his computers and recovered photos of young children being sexually abused. This remains an open investigation.
  • Suspected Car Thief Drowns Near Nickerson Street Marina: At about 11:30 p.m. on August 27th, police were notified that a Nissan Sentra had driven off of a pier near the Nickerson Street Marina. They arrived on scene and attempted to rescue a man in the water, who was calling for help. However, the man refused to grab the rope police were throwing to him, and pushed away from an officer who was trying to help him out of the water before he went under the surface. SPD and SFD divers searched the ship canal for over an hour without finding the man. Police recovered a man’s body from the water later that morning at 11:45 a.m. Further investigation revealed that the car driven into the canal was likely stolen from the Phinney Ridge neighborhood on Monday.
  • Gunman Fatally Wounded by Police in his Queen Anne Home: We reported more detail on this story earlier this month. Officers responded to the 300 block of West Prospect Street on August 30th just before 10:30 p.m., where they had reports of gunshots. A single suspect was standing outside the home brandishing a gun, and when police arrived, he quickly went into the home. He came out again shortly, and opened fire on the SPD officers on-scene. Two officers equipped with rifles returned fire and fatally wounded the gunman. He crawled back inside his home. After unsuccessfully attempting to contact the man, SWAT sent in a robot that found the man dead inside. Officers recovered multiple firearms and body armor in the home.

Don’t Miss the Final Farmers Market Days of the Season!

Radishes, asparagus, onions, sunflowers, honey and more! With all of the local produce, regional craft wares, food trucks, live music, chef demonstrations and other events, we’re toasting to another fantastic Queen Anne Farmers Market summer. It’s been an incredible season here with the Queen Anne Farmer’s Market, and we’re sad to see it end.

The final farmers market day will take place on October 16th from 3 – 7:30 p.m.

As part of the Queen Anne community, we want to give a quick shout out to the awesome vendors who participated in the farmers market this season…

We had delicious produce from Present Tense Farm, Steel Wheel Farm (herbs, too!), ChaGarden (plus their fresh flowers), Local Roots Farm, Alvarez Organic Farms, Lyall Farms, Bautista Farms, and Growing Washington.

There were juicy, ripe fruits from the Martin Family Orchard, Tonnemaker Family Orchard, Collins Family Orchard (plus asparagus), and oh-so-tasty berries from Skagit Sun, Hayton Farms, Youngquist Farms/Sky Harvest Produce, and Sidhu Farms.

We enjoyed farm raised beef, lamb and pork from Olsen Farms, 100 percent all-natural Angus beef from Anderson All Natural; meats, pasteurized egg hens and veggies and fruit from Skylight Farms; and artisan cheeses from Tieton Farm & Creamery.

All of the foods were perfect to pair with wines from Stomani Cellar & Winery, White Heron Cellars, and Wilridge Winery.

What’s more, there were bulbs and flowers from Choice Bulb Farms and micro-greens from Farm Box Greens.

All kinds of artisan foods from local purveyors, street food from some local favorites, and food trucks graced the market for some ready-to-eat deliciousness on Market Day every Thursday.

The sponsors for the 2014 season of the Queen Anne Farmer’s Market are owed a lot of thanks for their various levels of sponsorship: Metropolitan Market, Emerald Bay Equity, Axiom, Whole Foods, Jan Selvar for Windermere Real Estate, Liz Petrillo for Windermere Real Estate, HomeStreet Bank, Zeeks Pizza, Sip & Ship Mail & Dispatch, and Nancie Kosnoff from GrowingSeattle.com.

Catch the last couple of weeks of this delightful food experience on Thursdays from 3 – 7:30 p.m. until October 16th.
