Head To Green Lake And Get Your ‘Gobble’ On!

When you think of Thanksgiving, it’s pretty common to envision a beautiful table overflowing with piles of delicious, home cooked foods, a living room filled with family and friends, and of course, stretch pants, because one plate on Turkey day is NEVER enough.

If you’re interested in preemptively negating some of those holiday calories (or, maybe adding to them), the Green Lake Gobble & Mashed Potato Munch Off is the event for you!

Heralded as Seattle’s premier Thanksgiving themed run/walk event, the Green Lake Gobble & Mashed Potato Munch Off includes a 10K run/walk, and 5K run/walk, kids dash and a super eventful after run party featuring a beer garden and the much-loved Mashed Potato Munch Off. For those of you wondering, yes, the munch off is indeed a competitive mashed potato eating contest!

The fun starts bright and early at 8 AM in Green Lake Park on Sunday, November 20th with registration and packet pick-ups. Once you’re all check in, head over to the beer garden (opening at 9 AM…. because it IS Sunday-Funday, after all!)  and settle in to watch the (free!) kids dash at 9:10 AM. If you plan to run or walk the 10 or 5 K course, you’ll get started at 9:30 AM and are encouraged to join the post-race celebration, which starts at 10 AM.

If mountains of mashed potatoes are on the menu for you, be sure to purchase a raffle ticket (for only $1!) as soon as you get to the park, and bring a lucky charm along to help your ticket be chosen, making you one of 8 randomly selected contestants. The drawing for contestants will be at 10:30 AM and the Munch Off itself begins at 10:45 AM.

Contestants will have 4 minutes to gobble up as much of the creamy, carby goodness as they can before a winner is crowned. If you win this prestigious (and delicious) event, you will not only have bragging rights, but will take home all the money raised from raffle ticket sales and have earned life-time free entry to the 5K portion of the event. You must be 18 or older to engage in the eating contest, and we advise that you come dressed to gorge yourself, as these potatoes will be provided by The Green Lake Bar & Grill (who are also helping to sponsor the event), so you know they’re going to be good!

If you’re not one of the lucky 8, you’ll still have plenty to do at the post-race celebration. The party will be near the finish line of the race so you can cheer on your fellow racers (or the people you’ve come to support!) to a strong finish and see all the action. Have a beer in the beer garden, featuring brews from local favorite Fremont Brewing, and a few wines too, if that’s more your style.

The Beer garden will have a great view of the Mashed Potato Munch Off and it will be covered in case of rain and heated in case of cold. Be sure you bring your photo ID and cash money if you plan to imbibe, as the bar will be cash only. The celebration will also feature a number of health and fitness related vendors and exhibitors to explore and learn more about.

Since Thanksgiving is a holiday that encourages being grateful and also giving, feel free to bring canned foods (or a cash donation) to donate to Seattle’s Union Gospel Mission. The Union Gospel Mission has been helping needy, homeless gospeland hurting people in the community for over 80 years. They serve to help our neighbors in need with hunger, emergency services, shelter, addiction recovery and more. If you are in the mood to give, your gift of food or money will go directly to help people in need right here in our community.

The Green Lake Gobble is sure to be a great time for everyone who gets involved. Spectator, participator or mashed potato eater, everyone is guaranteed to have a fun and festive time, all while enjoying the beauty of Green Lake in the fall and our wonderful community. Bring the family, get some exercise and some beer, and dash into the holiday season!
