Quite a few people heard about the police chase across Queen Anne earlier this month, but other than that (and as usual) this Queen Anne crime recap remains relatively low-key. Read on for our latest Queen Anne crime recap and to stay in the loop on the happenings in our Seattle neighborhood.

Sandwich Shop Struggle: A suspect armed with a knife went into the Subway on 4th Avenue N and Denny Way on April 18th just before 9 a.m. He was throwing things around the shop, with the store employee telling him to stop. Next, the suspect began destroying the food items, and when the employee called security, the suspect pulled out a knife and struck the victim’s arm with the knife (which did not result in a visible injury). The victim then defended himself with a punch, and the suspect responded by taunting the victim for more of a fight. Deciding to await police and security, the victim fled the Subway shop. SPD arrived on the scene and took the suspect into custody without incident, and with positive identification from the victim.

Interbay Mugging Turned Water Bottle Burglary: A limousine driver stopped at a red light near the corner of 15th Avenue W and W Dravus Street on April 21st at about 11:15 p.m. and underwent an attempted mugging. While stopped at the light, a man approached the car and waved at the driver. When the driver rolled down his window, the suspect pointed a knife in his face and demanded money. The driver said he didn’t have any cash on him, so the suspect glanced around the car and grabbed a six-pack of bottled water before leaving the area. The driver contacted police, who searched the area for the suspect – a “boyish” white male wearing a black jacket and black backpack – but were unable to find anyone matching his description.

Racial Harassment Ends in Arrest: Just after 7 p.m. on April 27th, a large group of Arab-Americans was enjoying the International Fountain at the Seattle Center when they were harassed by a 52-year-old white male suspect. He was asking demeaning questions of the women in the group, and the men intervened and asked the suspect to leave them alone. In response, the suspect got into fighting stance and said he would “get a gun and shoot them all”. Concerned, someone in the group called 9-1-1 and police arrived within minutes. They found the suspect near the Seattle Center and arrested him without incident for investigation into Malicious Harassment.

Cop Car Chase Through Queen Anne: The crazy crime moment of the month was on May 2nd, when just after 12:15 p.m., a 35-year-old man was reported to have attacked an older man (50 years) on a bus that was traveling near the intersection of Aurora Avenue and Denny Way. According to the report, the suspect fled on foot into the Battery Street Tunnel, where two officers on patrol found him. When the SPD officers tried to stop him, he attacked a female officer and then apprehended a patrol car before speeding off. He was pursued until West Olympic Place and 8th Avenue W, where he was stopped after crashing into a retaining wall. Since he had cuts to his hands and face, and had not been wearing a seatbelt during the crash, he was transported to Harborview. He also appeared to be very intoxicated, and is also being investigated for a hit-and-run he may have committed while driving the stolen patrol car.

SPD Rolls Out Crime Forecasting: Hopefully Queen Anne will be the location of even less crime, now that SPD has rolled out their new crime forecasting program. Beginning Sunday, May 19th, officers at all five Seattle precincts received maps of their areas, showing red boxes around areas where criminal activity is more likely or anticipated. The maps are created from a software program called PredPol, which analyzes crime patterns derived from 911 calls. Click here to get more info about the program.

Stay safe, Queen Anne!

Do you know of a local nonprofit that makes the Seattle area or the Pacific Northwest a better place to live? GiveBIG and give back to that or another nonprofit with the Seattle Foundation’s annual online charitable giving event this Wednesday, May 15th!

Each individual who makes a credit card donation in this 100% online giving event will see a prorated portion of matching funds given – so even more money will go toward helping these Seattle nonprofits further their efforts. The Seattle Foundation will ‘stretch’ (or match a portion) of all donations up to $25,000 per donor and/or organization.

How does it work? First, choose from one (or a few) of more than 1,400 nonprofits that the Seattle Foundation has profiled on their website. Then, give big between midnight and midnight on May 15th. Your donation will go that extra bit further by the prorated portion of the matching funds from the ‘stretch’ pool that will go with it to your nonprofit(s) of choice.

Just so you know, there are several Queen Anne nonprofits on the Seattle Foundation’s list, including the Queen Anne Helpline, Queen Anne Farmer’s Market, and Queen Anne Food Bank. Click here to see the list

Oh, and even better – donors will be chosen at random to receive an additional $1,000 and a round trip Alaskan Airlines plane ticket given in their name to the non-profit that they originally donated to. And to return the favor, Starbucks is sponsoring a $100 gift card for you!

This exciting, charitable giving opportunity is bound to be a free-for-all of giving BIG! It’s one of those Seattle events that you’ll want to be a part of.

It’s an “event to inspire people to give generously to nonprofit organizations who make our region a healthier and more vital place to live,” according to the Foundation’s website.

Get more details, steps for how to donate, and more on the Seattle Foundation’s website, and give BIG on May 15th!

The Seattle Department of Transportation announced that lane restrictions on Mercer and Broad Streets would begin today, Thursday, May 9th.

In addition to the lane restrictions on northbound 9th Avenue – which began yesterday – westbound Mercer will include a single lane restriction between Westlake Avenue N. and Harrison Street from today until next Friday, May 17th (24 hours per day). Additionally, eastbound Mercer will have one lane closed from Dexter Avenue N. to 9th Avenue tomorrow, May 10th from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. – so it’s probably a good idea to leave earlier than normal for work if this area is part of your commute on Friday.

The 9th Avenue N. lane restriction is reduced to a single northbound lane between Aloha Street and 8th Avenue N for three weeks.

According to the SDOT update, “Lane restrictions on Mercer and Broad streets will allow crews to re-channelize the roadway in preparation for re-opening Broad St. to eastbound traffic on Monday, May 20th following the full weekend closure of SR 99 for Mercer West construction.”

Next weekend, May 17 – 20th, SDOT will begin work to demolish the east side of SR 99 as it crosses over Mercer Street. The next step in that plan will be to widen Mercer between Dexter and Fifth. Therefore, SR 99 will be completely closed to traffic that weekend between Valley Street and the Battery Street Tunnel. Mercer Street will also be completely closed from Fifth Avenue N and Dexter. Sidewalks along these areas will also be closed.

SR 99 closures begin Friday, May 17th at 11 p.m. and end Monday, May 20th at 5 a.m. Click here for the map of closures that weekend.

This is only the beginning of the major Mercer Corridor Project closures and lane restrictions. Greater impacts begin Monday, May 20th with the beginning of construction on the new SR 99 overpass. Click here to see a detour map.

“To help alleviate traffic congestion during Mercer lane restrictions, Broad St. will be re-opened to eastbound traffic on Monday, May 20, as an alternate route to reach I-5,” says the SDOT report.

It’s going to be a rough year or so for commuters – more Mercer lane restrictions and closures will continue through the West Phase of the project. It’s estimated to be complete by the middle of 2015. Until then, let’s hope that the traffic and construction aren’t too horrible for commuters.

Citizen is not just your average coffee shop. “We started as a coffee shop, but that lasted about… one day!” says owner Suzana Olmos. “Everyone went crazy for the food, and now we’re a café.”

With breakfast served anytime, as well as sandwiches, salads, and crêpes – both savory and sweet – Citizen is a place to be for any meal. They do monthly specials on the menu, but there are a handful of menu items that never go away. One of those is their Henry’s Scramble Breakfast, and their Breakfast Tacos are notoriously awesome – meat or potato with egg and cheddar cheese on a flour tortilla, served with pico de gallo or spicy chipotle salsa.

If you’re in a hurry, Citizen’s Buttermilk Cheddar Chive biscuits are not-to-be-missed! The café can also cater some of their breakfast items for events, making it a versatile eatery with hungry Seattleites and Queen Anne-ers in mind.

Seattle seems to like the café. Back in March 2013, Citizen was voted the best independent coffee shop in Seattle Magazine’s Reader’s Choice Awards for 2013.

Olmos opened Citizen back in September of 2009. “I took the space down to its raw bones,” she says. Its location on Taylor Ave. in Lower Queen Anne, or Uptown, the space used to just be a storage building before Suzana was hooked by its potential.

She added the staircase and made the upstairs dining area safe for patrons, while also fitting out the main downstairs area of the Queen Anne restaurant to hold prep and cooking space in addition to the bar and window seating. Olmos also added a small outdoor seating area to the south of the café, which is great for outdoor dining during good weather – like today!

“I love all of the elements – the old timber, brick, glass,” she said. “I like the rawness. My only stipulation with the place was that nothing be shiny and new. I tried to salvage as much as I could.”

Due to their tiny kitchen and workspace, there isn’t much room for food storage so everything is super fresh. “We’re about homemade fresh food to take or eat here,” Suzana says. “The space dictates that everything is fresh and mostly local.”

For their breakfast menu, Citizen also has a lot of things most other morning dining places don’t have, like their breakfast tacos. Not only are they known for great espresso, which they get from Lighthouse Coffee Roasters, but they also have all local beers on tap and several reasonably priced bottles of wine.

They will be rolling out a cocktail program soon, as well. “I want to be able to offer happy hour,” Olmos said. “But we do what we do really well.”

The Citizen café is open seven days a week, from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and until 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

They announced their full lineup for the 39th annual festival on Tuesday (April 30th). According to the press release posted on their website, “This year SIFF will screen 447 films: 272 features (plus 4 secret films), and 175 shorts representing 85 countries, including 49 World (18 Features, 31 Shorts), 48 North American (38 Features, 10 Shorts), and 17 US Premieres (6 Features, 11 Shorts).”

Whew!

The lineup of films for this year include “The Way, Way Back,” “Decoding Annie Parker,” “Prince Avalanche,” “Ain’t Them Bodies Saints,” “Middleton,” and “Drinking Buddies.” Famous actors and actresses starring in these films are rife – Steve Carrell, Helen Hunt, Rashida Jones, Paul Rudd, Rooney Mara, Andy Garcia, and Olivia Wilde, to name a few of the most notable.

The film tells the stories of sparring lovers Beatrice and Benedick, and is a contemporary reworking of Shakespeare’s classic, directed by Joss Whedon. It was filmed in just 12 days. Whedon and several cast members are scheduled to attend SIFF’s opening night premiere of their movie.

After the premiere, attendees will celebrate the beginning of SIFF’s 39th annual festival with hors d’oeuvres, desserts, dancing, and complimentary cocktails. The opening night festivities take place at Marion Oliver McCaw Hall at 7 p.m. (beginning with the screening of Much Ado About Nothing), and cost $50 or $100 for general and premium admission, respectively. Click here for more Opening Night Gala information.

Take a free class this Wednesday, May 1st from 4 – 6 p.m., where you can learn to cook nutritional food without breaking the bank!

Paule Attar, the co-owner of Bellevue’s Paule Attar Salon and Spa, has begun special classes “to provide nourishment to people who may not ordinarily have access to wholesome, fresh food.”

Her event back in February was a hit, so she’s bringing it back several times this year, beginning with the May 1st Queen Anne event. “Eat to Thrive” will take place from 4 – 6 p.m. at the Queen Anne Presbyterian Church. It will be a free event!

“The program is set up to feature seasonal foods that are nourishing, affordable and easy to prepare,” according to a press release. Attar’s focus is on “teaching people of all ages how to cook nourishing food that is simple, delicious and easy to make … The program teaches people how to cook nourishing food for a low cost.”

‘Eat to Thrive’ is a great opportunity for neighbors and community members to learn new ways to cook healthy food that is also inexpensive. Cost is one of the larger barriers for people to eat healthfully, and Paule Attar is seeking to change that with her cooking classes.

Partners of the ‘Eat to Thrive’ classes include the Queen Anne Presbyterian Church, Emerald City Lights, and The Queen Anne Helpline.

Mark your calendars! Future classes include July 24th, October 2nd, and December 4th. All events are from 4 – 6 p.m. and are currently scheduled to take place at the Queen Anne Presbyterian Church.

Please RSVP to Patricia Vaccarino prforpeopleevents@gmail.com. Patricia is also looking for volunteers; please contact her at the email address above if you’re interested.

When: Wednesday May 1, from 4 – 6 p.m.
Where: Queen Anne Presbyterian Church Meeting Hall, 414 West Howe Street, Seattle 98119.

Known for his humorous, award-winning novels, short stories and poems, local author Sherman Alexie will be visiting the newly-opened Queen Anne Book Co. on Saturday, April 27th.

The afternoon is sure to be a hit, with Alexie signing and reading from his own books – which will be available for purchase, or readers can bring their own copies. In addition, he’ll be acting as bookseller for the afternoon, recommending other books, taking up a stance behind the counter, and helping readers find new literary treasures throughout the store.

Alexie is known for the humorous and experience-inspired stories of growing up on a Native American Indian reservation in Spokane. He recently appeared on Bill Moyers’ show to talk about living in two different cultures simultaneously. Sherman Alexie is the author of The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, The Business of Fancydancing, and more – most recently, Blasphemy: New and Selected Stories (released in October, 2012). His novels, poetry and story collections have won several awards, and he is known as one of the best writers of our time. In addition, he has a great sense of humor and a passion for participating in local book business, as evident in Saturday’s event at the Queen Anne Book Co.

The Queen Anne Book Co. store opened on Friday, March 1st, 2013 after the old Queen Anne Books, which had been open for nearly 15 years, closed on October 31st, 2012. It was a jubilant day in the Queen Anne and local author community when word was released early this year that another bookstore would be taking over the space.

Visit this new-and-improved bookstore (it used to be Queen Anne Books) this coming Saturday for an author event that you won’t want to miss!

When: Saturday, April 27th from 1 – 5 p.m.
Where: Queen Anne Book Co. at 1811 Queen Anne Ave N, Seattle 98109
Cost: Free and open to the public
